Boo Camp Schedule 2022

Talent:

Caller:

Wendy Graham

Wendy Graham (Durango, Colorado) is a self-described “dance maniac.” Her passion for music, song and dance caught fire in 1991 on a Danish-American Exchange (DAE) youth dance tour to Denmark. Today, Wendy leads English, American, and Social Dances (Swing, Latin, Blues, Waltz, Country Western, and more!) in Durango, CO, across the country, and abroad in England and Denmark. She proudly served on the Lloyd Shaw Foundation and Country Dance and Song Society (CDSS) boards, as well as the CDSS Lifetime Contribution Award committee. She is passionate about building community and sharing the joy of music, song and dance with people of all ages and abilities.  She is learning to play accordion for dancers. Follow Wendy on Facebook and Instagram. Find dance opportunities at www.perkypantsdance.com. We are excited for the wide range of dance workshops Wendy will lead with positional calling.

Bands:

Avourneen

Avourneen (pronounced a-VORE-neen) are one of Colorado’s go to contra dance bands. The band is composed of guitarist/vocalist Adam Goldstein, violinist Cieran Morden, and Alice Alister and specializes in Irish folk music. Together, they play a brand of Celtic music that’s both timeless and innovative, a take on the genre the Celtic Connection calls “unique in Colorado – and perhaps in the country.” The trio has made impressive strides in their time together including playing many high-profile festivals across the West, including the Colorado Irish Festival, the Cheyenne Celtic Festival, the Elizabeth Celtic Festival and the Celtic Harvest Festival. They also have two full length albums Beloved (2014) and Sparrow (2020). Avourneen has long been a favorite of the New Mexico contra dance community and we are so excited to welcome them back!

The Parson Sisters

The Parson Sisters is a duo based in Albuquerque, NM, specializing in global folk dance music, including Balkan, Irish, contra, and English Country. Comprised of Mirinisa Stewart-Tengco (strings, vocals, percussion) and Clara Byom (keys, clarinets, vocals, electronics), The Parson Sisters have quickly become sought-after dance musicians throughout the Southwest. In a few busy years, they have performed at over 60 events, including FolkMADness, Southwest Pickers Bluegrass and Traditional Music Festival, Albuquerque Folk Festival, Phoenix English Country Tea Dance, Tarab Retreat, dance parties, private events, and four out-of-state tours. From tight vocal harmonies in traditional Macedonian lesnotos to Clara’s charming original tunes to Mirinisa’s exquisite Scandinavian fiddling to psychedelic techno contra, The Parson Sisters provide the most eclectic collection of dance music in the Southwest.  You can look forward to The Parson Sisters playing the techno contra during the Boo Ball Saturday Night!

Sound:

Russell Berman can frequently be found running sound at New Mexico dances, including previous Boo Camps! He has been an active member of the FolkMADS board since 2019 serving as both Vice President and Secretary during different terms.

FAQs

Q: What terms will be called?
A: Wendy is passionate about positional calling and we are excited to support her efforts. Most dances and workshops will use positional calling with no role names. When the schedule is finalized, we will include what terms will be used for that session (positional, larks/robins, or gents/ladies). As always, everyone is welcome to dance any role and dance with any and all other dancers.

Q: Can I register for part of the weekend?
A: Yes! Registration for a-la-cart is now available! You can chose to come for just one of the days or part of Saturday. Please still pre-register so we know how many people are coming and we can plan ahead. The prices are listed below, there is an optional, extra $20 for dinner Saturday.
– Friday night dance: $20
– Saturday full day: $75
– Saturday partial day: $40
– Sunday morning and afternoon: $45

Q: Why are you requiring a vaccine and a rapid test?
A: We all know that COVID-19 is unpredictable, and while vaccines protect you personally from a severe case of COVID-19, they do not reduce the transmission of the virus, especially with the new Omicron variants. In order to dance as safely as possible, we need to test each attendee so that we can catch a positive case before someone enters the building. Tests will be provided for you if you cannot obtain a test on your own.

Q: Why did Boo Camp change to a “City Camp?”
A: The goal of Boo Camp has always been to provide an affordable dance weekend for our local dancers, highlighting the talent of callers and bands within our Southwest region. While a retreat-style weekend is a blast, there are not many affordable options for hosting that kind of event within our region in October. In addition, city camps are simpler to cancel at the last minute if a new COVID wave approaches.

Q: What meals will be provided?
A: Lunch on Saturday and Sunday will be potluck! During registration you will sign up for a type of item to bring. These items can be stored at the dance hall (we will have plenty of refrigerator access). Saturday night we will have a food cart on site for dinner. We will do our best to address all food restrictions, but the options will be available ahead of time. We will also have a list of restaurants close to the hall. Snacks, coffee and tea will also be provided throughout the day.

Q: What do I need to bring?
A: Potluck item, snack table item, silent auction item, and costume for the Boo Ball. More items will be listed in your registration confirmation email.

Q: Can I bring pets?
A: No.

Q: Can I wear perfume or a fragrant deodorant?
A: We’d ask that you refrain from using fragrant self-care products as we are trying to go fragrant-free this year as certain fragrances can cause allergic reactions.
